Waikato Botanical Society End of Year “Do”

Lake Hiwiroa, Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park (combined with Rotorua Botanical Society)

We will drive through forestry roads to the edge of the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park. We will then retrace the old DOC track to Lake Hiwiroa last visited by Rotorua Botanical Society in 1985. The old track follows through virgin rimu/tawa forest with a well developed understorey as there are few browsing ungulates in this area which should provide interesting botanising. Anniversary Weekend Trip (Combined with Rotorua Botanical Society) Meet: Corner of Fraser Smith Road and Manganui Road, Awakino @ 11am We will be visiting Awakino Scenic Reserve on the Saturday. Awakino Scenic Reserve is a hard beech forest with a coastal influence. Meet : DOC Rotorua Office, 99 Sala St, Rotorua, go in Scion (Forest Research) north entrance and turn left before the locked gates 8:30am or DOC Ashpit Road campground, Lake Rerewhakaaitu at 9:15am. Grade :Medium-Hard and in particular confident walking on steep mobile scoria slopes and along high and sharp ridges. Registration: Minimum age 14 years old. Poland QEII Covenant Limeworks Loop Road

Easy trip to a small QEII covenant with weed issues but impressive diversity of native  species. The forest provides reasonable shelter so the trip will go ahead unless weather is unusually bad. The covenant is on largely level ground bounded by a river. There will be ponding of water in some areas so gumboots could be useful.
